Why Read It in Spanish?
"Vine a Comala porque me dijeron que acá vivía mi padre, un tal Pedro Páramo." I came to Comala because they told me my father lived here, a certain Pedro Páramo. Thirteen words. No adjectives. No flourishes. And yet this opening line is one of the most haunting in all of literature. Rulfo writes with the economy of a desert — every word counts because there is nothing to waste. His Spanish is the Spanish of rural Mexico: spare, musical, ancient. Words like "murmullo" (a murmur that could be wind or could be ghosts), "páramo" (a bleak, empty wasteland — and also the character's name, as if he were made of desolation itself), "madrugada" (the hour before dawn when the boundary between the living and dead dissolves). At 124 pages, this is the shortest masterpiece in the Spanish language. In translation it is powerful. In Spanish, where the silences between Rulfo's words carry as much meaning as the words themselves, it is shattering.
